George and Dragon from the street

Take a trip back in time to Long Melford's 16th century village inn. Restored to its coaching glory, the proprietors of the George and Dragon have successfully re-created the arts of innkeeping.

There is nothing which has yet been contrived by Man
by which so much happiness is produced as by
a good tavern or inn.

(Samuel Johnson)

The bar at the George and Dragon

The tavern has no karaokes, no discos and no keg beer. The house wine is from Bordeaux, not Bulgaria. The beers are dispensed with a traditional beer engine without the assistance of CO2, and the superb food is created in the kitchen and not in the supplier's factory.

There are a number of comfortable letting rooms, plentiful parking, secluded gardens and courtyards, an elegant restaurant and dining suite, real pub bars with occasional Jazz, Folk and Blues, and above all a selection of traditional beers supplied by local brewers Greene King.

The menus are changed daily with specialties including pies and puddings all cooked to local recipes, and made with the finest local game and produce. The result is both imaginative and filling, without a hint of Nouvelle Cuisine. The wine list includes superb French wines at realistic prices, among them some excellent clarets.

From wedding receptions to retirement parties, from Christmas to birthdays, we can devise a menu to suit all tastes.

The Georgian Suite, converted from medieval stables, is set in the courtyard, and can seat up to thirty people for private celebrations.

A bedroom at the George and DragonThe six well-appointed bedroom suites have been refurbished to a very high standard. With full central heating, colour TV, direct dial phone, ensuite shower rooms and complimentary tea or coffee, the comfort of our guests is ensured.

Ours is a lively village inn, and residents are welcome to join the locals and staff over a drink in our bar, an experience no longer encountered in today's modern world. With open fires during the winter and our beautiful gardens to relax in during the summer we promise to make your stay an enjoyable experience so that some day you may return.
