Ancient find in Long Melford

Wednesday, 07 of December, 2011

We knew Long Melford had a history but now  the discovery of a very early worked flint axe takes the beginnings of the village back by many many hundreds of years. The 'Tranchet axe' is dated as Mesolithic c.8,300 - 4,500 BC.

Rob Simpson found the axe during a dig inspired by the 'Melford Dig' held earlier this year as part of the BBC programme due in the Spring 'Story of the Nation' with Michael Wood.
