The Idea of a Parish Plan

The Government is encouraging a move towards grass-roots democracy in the form of 'Community Planning'. Whatever the theory behind this move, and however cynical one may be about 'Consultation' by government agencies, this seems to be a worthwhile thing for Long Melford to do.

The aim of the plan is to find out a great deal about the village; what it is, what it does, the people who live here, those who work here, how the village is used, and what facilities it offers. That leads on to finding out what matters to all those people about the village, both the things they value and the things they feel should be improved.

It will take a lot of work to find out what people really want and what they care about in relation to Long Melford because there are so many people and (luckily!) so many different views.

If we can pull all those views together into a sensible 'Parish Plan' it can become the foundation of discussions with the District Council about planning questions, with the County Council about transport and traffic issues, with the NHS Primary Care Trust about healthcare, and with other agencies about anything else that concerns Long Melford as a whole. Clearly, having a Parish Plan will not mean that we win all the battles, but without a plan we are likely to lose most of them!
