Long Melford Parish CouncilLONG MELFORD PARISH COUNCIL Telephone: 01787 378084 " However in the eyes of the villagers and especially the mat makers the sooner they got rid of the “Gardeens” and the Overseers too the better, and great was the enthusiasm for the formation of the new Parish Council. Noisy meetings were held and a large number of people were persuaded to put up for election, eager to get on the first Parish Council. The most popular people in the in the village were elected, but after they’d had three years of it most of them said “ Let someone else have a go!” *........ Such was the account of the first Council elections of 1894. Today Long Melford is a thriving village with a population of around 4000 people and 150 businesses. It was described by one resident in a recent survey of the village as being.... “Big enough to support a good range of amenities, small enough to have a good community atmosphere. It is a beautiful place to live.” .....The aim of the Council is simple – to keep it that way. Full Council Meetings are held in the Library on the third Tuesday of every month and we encourage residents to come along to have their say.
