"Long Melford Library Protest" on Saturday, 09 of April, 2011

There are strong feelings in Long Melford about retention of the village Library, which is housed in a room next to the United Reformed Church in Hall Street, Long Melford.  Speaking in respect of the demonstration, Vice Chairman of Long Melford Parish Council John Nunn said “It would be a disaster for a community the size of Long Melford, with just over a 4000 population to lose their long established village Library, such is the feeling that villagers are expressing their concern at a peaceful demonstration outside the village Library today”.  Whilst this is the visible sign of concern within the village, members of the  Parish Council together with the friends of Long Melford Library have been working hard to put forward a plan to save the Library for the future.

County Councillor Richard Kemp one of the Parish Councillors on the sub group formulating the proposal, “ said he had been impressed with efforts of local residents, who together with Parish Councillors have now arrived at a draft proposal to save the Library and run it as a Community based project.  The proposal will require Suffolk County Council to co-operate with a realistic level of future financial support, which if adopted will save the County Council and the Tax payer a considerable amount money, which is surely the ultimate reason for divestment.
