Some of my recommended reads |
I've recently introduced recommended read cards, to help customers with that tricky decision making process. Each time I do a new batch, I'll copy them here in case you feel like doing some advanced thinking. I'd love it, if you would give me your recommendations too, either in person or by emailing me landers_bookshop@btconnect.com or via this site. Anyway, here's my first selection:
Sarah recommends: STONES FALL - IAIN PEARS This is a dense and complex novel of mystery and suspense. Once I became immersed in the story I was hooked. Largely narrated by 3 fascinating characters this is a great book if you are looking for something gripping and intelligent to get your teeth into. Only draw back is the small print but if you can manage without a magnifier I thoroughly recommend this title. Sarah Recommends: SHANTARAM - GREGORY DAVID ROBERTS One of the best books I’ve ever read. Its based on the real life exploits of the author who has led a distinctly colourful life. For someone who has clearly crossed the ’line’ and mixed with people you’d rather not meet on a dark night, he manages to write beautifully and convey a warmth that is irresistible. Read the back cover and then read this book. You wont be disappointed! Sarah Recommends: NO TIME FOR GOODBYE - LINWOOD BARCLAY This is a easy to read, un-put-down-able book. Utterly gripping to the end. Really, you wont be able to put it down until you’ve finished it. Sarah Recommends: THE MILLENIUM TRILOGY - STIEG LARSSON If you haven’t come across these yet, where have you been? Probably the best thrillers I can remember and you’ll find lots of folk who’d agree. Modern and contemporary, they do contain some sexual violence so not for everyone, but if you like thrillers I really would recommend these ones. Sarah Recommends: CUTTING FOR STONE - ABRAHAM VERGHESE Dense and satisfying family saga following the lives of twins born in Ethiopia. Small print and extensive medical (gory) details may put some off but if you have strong eyes and stomach, then this is a richly rewarding read. Sarah Recommends: THE BEAN TREES - BARBARA KINGSOLVER If you haven’t yet read the Poisonwood Bible, then please do. Its wonderful. This less well known title by the author is utterly charming too. One of those lovely uplifting reads. I’m guessing it maybe a book that will appeal more to women than men, but I’m happy to be corrected. Sarah Recommends: THE SUMMER BOOK - TOVE JANSSON Probably one of my all time favourite books. It’s a light, short and a beautiful book about the relationship between a young girl and her grandmother during a summer spent on an Island in Finland. Utterly charming and uplifting! Sarah Recommends: SCAPEGALLOWS - CAROL BIRCH Eighteenth century smuggling in Suffolk. Inspired by the real life story of Margaret Catchpole and largely set in and around Ipswich and the Suffolk coast this is not just a good local tale, it’s a great adventure story too. Sarah Recommends: SHARDLAKE SERIES (DISSOLUTION ETC) - C.J.SANSOM If you like history and a good crime novel, then these are the books for you. Well written and clever, Shardlake makes a wonderful sixteenth century detective and Sansom manages to bring to life the sounds and smells of Tudor England. Tony, a customer Recommends: THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN - JAMES HOLLAND Tony tells me that this is the best book he has read on the subject (and he has read a lot!) Well written, well researched and written with passion, he says I should tell you all to read it, so go on….! |
